Find the Right Pool for Your Backyard
April 28/2021

Now that summer is here, it's time to decide what type of pool you will need to build your ultimate backyard escape. The size of your space and your overall budget are important factors when it comes to finding that perfect pool. Whether you're looking for above ground or in-ground pools, we put together a list of pros and cons to help you make the right choice for your outdoor space.

In-Ground Pools

In-ground pools can be the perfect addition to your home for you and your family to enjoy.  In-ground pools are often thought of as the more luxurious option for backyard pools, but they require a fair amount of space and budget. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different material and deck finishings. Let’s break down the pros and cons of choosing an in-ground pool.

Pros

Design

There are many options for designing your in-ground pool to match your taste and backyard space and landscaping. Depending on your budget, you can build your in-ground pool with concrete, fibreglass or vinyl--note that fibreglass is sold as a large, one-piece shell that has fewer opportunities for customizing the shape. Since the pool is built right in your backyard, there are endless customization options for shape, size and finishings.

Added Value to Your Home

In-ground pools are luxurious structures installed in a backyard. So while they may be an expensive investment, the pool installation can boost your property value and can be a bonus selling point for your home.

Life Span

In-ground pools have a much longer lifespan than above-ground, and can last upwards of 20 to 50 years if properly maintained and cared for.

Convenience and Family Fun

Swimming pools are fun, multi-purpose additions to your property. Whether for parties, exercise, relaxing, or entertaining, your own swimming pool can do it all. It’s super convenient to not pack swimsuits, towels and snacks into a car to go to a public pool— instead, it’s all right at home. All the fun and enjoyment of the water, with all the amenities and comfort of your own home.

Cons

More Maintenance

If you want to get the most out of your in-ground swimming pool for years to come, you’ll need to regularly clean and maintain your pool. You can make this job a bit easier by installing additional filtration systems and automated cleaners, or hiring a professional to do it for you, but it still takes effort and money. Regular maintenance, however, can prevent the need for expensive repairs if there’s a build-up of ignored issues.

Expensive

A good quality in-ground pool, customized to your liking and to your backyard space, will cost tens of thousands of dollars — not to mention it will take a few weeks to install and get running. It’s not a decision to make lightly! But as mentioned in the pros section, it may provide you with a good return on your investment if you decide to sell your home.

Safety

It’s important to keep safety as a consideration when thinking about an in-ground pool, as they can be more dangerous for small children and pets to fall into. That said, it’s important to take the right precautions and make thoughtful safety measures, such as a fence, to make sure your pool is just as safe as anything else in your yard. An above ground pool comes with the built-in safety feature of having a wall around the pool, so it’s less likely anyone will fall in.

Permanency

Installing an in-ground pool permanently alters the landscape of your space. This is something that will be in your backyard for years, if not decades to come. If you do move to sell your property, not everyone is interested in having the cost and maintenance involved in a swimming pool. But once you do commit, you don’t have to worry about replacing it for a long, long time.

Above Ground Pools:

Above ground pools are known to be a great alternative to in-ground residential pools, and while in-ground has a reputation for being more luxurious, with the right deck and finishings an above ground pool can look just as fancy! Modern above ground pools come in a variety of designs along with some of the best features. To see if an above ground pool is a better fit for you than an in-ground pool, here is a list of pros and cons.

Pros

Cost

Above ground pools come at a significantly lower cost than in-ground pools. For the cost of a cheap in-ground pool, you can probably get a top-of-the-line above ground pool – and still have money left over to throw your first pool party! Even if you install a wooden deck around the pool to elevate its looks, it will still cost less than half of an in-ground pool.

Maintenance

Both in-ground and above ground pools require similar maintenance in terms of chemical balancing, cleaning and filtering. In-ground pools are more durable and less likely to be damaged by the elements, but if it does happen, repairs are more expensive than for an above ground pool. And if an above ground pool is old and worn down, it can simply be removed or replaced.

Perfect for small spaces

If you have a smaller backyard space, an above ground pool is a perfect option as it doesn’t require excavation and they take up less space. They require less planning, excavation and construction than an in-ground pool. And if you decide you want to do something else with the limited space you have, an above ground pool is easy to remove.

Temporary/Portable

Above ground pools are temporary and portable! If you move to a new home, your pool can move with you. And it’s easy to get rid of if your kids get older and your family no longer uses an above ground pool.

Cons

Design & Depth Limitation

Above-ground pools come in a limited selection of sizes and shapes, and don’t have the same endless customization options as an in-ground pool. The pool also won’t be as deep as an in-ground pool, which may be a drawback for the serious swimmer (or party cannonballer). If you have your heart set on a diving board, an unusual pool shape, or some other nonstandard feature, you may be out of luck. That said, you can still get creative with wooden decking around the pool and other landscaping features!

Life Span

An above-ground pool does not last nearly as long as an in-ground pool. It’s made of cheaper materials and is more exposed to the elements. Fortunately, it’s easy to remove if it does break down, and has a quick installation time if you end up needing to replace it.

Don’t Add Value to Your Property

An above-ground pool doesn’t add value to your home the way an in-ground pool can, since it’s not a permanent addition to your backyard.
